Rock Band Thank You CaptureToday marks the end of an era for Harmonix Music Systems. It’s the end of the video game music industry, again, because it’s the second time Harmonix is stepping into the shadows to quietly work on… whatever their next big project will be. Whether or not that project will manage to garner the initial praise and success of Guitar Hero and Rock Band is unknown, but Harmonix made the move, today, to announce the end of weekly DLC updates for the Rock Band Music Store. The move was marked by the addition of Don McLean’s American Pie to the music store, and the release of a “goodbye and thank you” video on YouTube.

This doesn’t mean the complete end of new music in Rock Band, because the Rock Band Network will still be active for bands who want to add their music to the game. There will also be occasional promotions, and the servers will still be live, presumably as long as Harmonix is around. American Pie is available for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii at the usual $2 USD equivalent.
