It's-Oscar-time!I don’t remember the last time I saw a really good Academy Awards show. I have this vague memory of a year with shadow puppets, but that’s about all. There have been splashes of solid entertainment in the past few years, but there has yet to be a year where the Oscars are primarily good with a hint of bad. They’ve all been bad with sprinkles of good. And this year followed suit.

Like the nominees, this year the show was very up in the air. There was this sense that it might have potential, but there was this underlying uncertainty based on the residual pangs of trauma from previous award ceremonies. And sadly, it wasn’t nearly as good as it could’ve been. It had its moments (DDL’s awesome speech, Jennifer Lawrence’s adorable fall/recovery, Adele’s pipes of amazingness, and JGL dancing), but its pros were overshadowed by its faults.

Namely, the intro that was only occasionally funny, the orchestra overshadowed a lot of the singing, Seth MacFarlane, though a decent entertainer, left some to be desired, the Bond tribute was lame, Michelle Obama’s unnecessary speech was sanctimoniously annoying, and there were way too many commercial breaks.
