Well, I suppose this handily trumps Microsoft’s pre-release promotional nod to Canada with Forza Horizon. If you haven’t already heard, the major gaming news of the day is that Nintendo is releasing a special miniature version of the original Wii for the holiday season. Oh, and it’s exclusive to Canada. Once you manage to wipe that gobsmacked look from your face, you can read on to learn that the Wii Mini is set to release on December 7th, for $99.99, and it comes in matte black with a red border and, as Nintendo puts it, “works with most Wii accessories”. Included in the box with the console are one red Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuck and other necessary basic adapters.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “There has got to be some kind of catch, right?” You’re darn right, there is! Wii Mini has no Internet capabilities, and no GameCube compatibility. I understand the latter, given the fact that most interested, GameCube owning gamers are likely to own an original Wii anyway by now, but the former is rather surprising, as it removes the usefulness of online compatible games. Nintendo is being mum about its future availability in other markets.
