Say what you will about us Canadians (though I might suggest saying it with caution), give us a reason to go out, and we don’t mind the cold. Despite near or sub-zero temperatures last night, Toronto fans of the decade-old Halo franchise came out in force last night for the midnight launch of Halo 4, and Xbox Canada and EB Games rewarded that loyalty by putting on a show worthy of the franchise’s popularity. Taking over all of Dundas Square, the crowds were treated to their own initiation into the UNSC, ID photos and all, a “live fire combat simulation” against a team working for the event, free Doritos and Mountain Dew, courtesy of PepsiCo (an advertising partner for the game), and a multiplayer competition ending in a chance to win a Limited Edition Halo 4 Xbox 360.
The night also included a screening of Forward Unto Dawn in its entirety, with all of the intro scenes featuring Cortana re-edited into one full, lengthier introduction. The night went on from there, culminating with the midnight launch of Halo 4, after which I assume fans did not go home to sleep, but to play the game instead.
