Going a little further than simply answering players’ requests, EA SPORTS expanded on last year’s addition of a generic female character to its NHL video game franchise by announcing today that two former female hockey superstars will be included as part of the NHL 13 playable Legends roster, alongside newly added Hall of Famers Doug Gilmour, Jari Kurri and Dominik Hasek. And who better to kick off the addition of female players than Team Canada’s own Hayley Wickenheiser and Team USA’s Angela Ruggiero.

The addition of these female greats is all part of a commitment by the franchise’s development team after a request made by a 14 year old female fan led to the aforementioned introduction of a female character for its Be A Pro mode. Playable Legends will be integrated within several modes in NHL 13 – Be A Legend, Legends Teams and Hockey Ultimate Team  & Be A GM – giving players the opportunity to play through a career as a Legend, play head-to-head with and against Legends (players on Team Wickenheiser and Team Ruggiero were picked by the two players respectively), and more. NHL 13 is set to release on September 11th in North America, and on the 14th in Europe.
