Starbuck opens with a man, a directionless man, who is deep in debt to the wrong people, and decides, in his vast brilliance, to start growing marijuana. We also learn very early on that his ex(ish)-girlfriend, who happens to be a cop, is pregnant. With these two big plot points, and their levels of interconnectivity, you’d think we’d have the right ingredients for, at least, a decent film. Well, sadly, the plot builds further from there. We learn that this fellow donated sperm over 600 hundred times and produced almost as many children. And that’s where things get bumpy.
You see, the problem is that after we discover that his sperm created several hundred children, the other two stories barely get any attention. He goes from being frightened of getting brutally savaged for not having the money in time, to spending all his time trying to learn about the kids he made. It felt considerably scatter-brained!
However, the truth is, even with the amount of stuff in the film, I really quite liked it. It was funny, charming, well paced, and I just adored spending time with the protagonist. It wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed the ride regardless.
