Say what you will about marketers and their tactics to get you to buy stuff, genuinely playing to their target demographic is probably their least deplorable method of attention-getting. That’s what we see today, with Sony’s announcement that Toronto Blue Jay Jose Bautista will be the cover athlete for the Canadian version of MLB 12: The Show, the latest installment of Sony’s popular baseball franchise. Bautista has been one of the Blue Jays’ top players since his breakout season three years ago, in which he hit 54 home runs, recorded 92 extra-base hits and, well a number of other statistics that baseball fans are into.

Oh, and he also received an all-time record number of All-Star votes this season (just under 7.5 million), surpassing none other than Ken Griffey Jr., who received just under 6.1 million votes in 1994. Oh, and just to rub it in, Alex Rodriguez, of the New York Yankees, maxed out at number 7 with under 4 million votes. Bautista finds himself in good company with the American version’s cover athlete, Boston Red Sox All-Star first basemen Adrian Gonzalez. MLB 12: The Show will be launching for Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita on March 6th.
