As you probably already surmised from the headline, Epic Games showed off the Horde 2.0 and Beast multiplayer modes from Gears of War 3 at X’11, and I’m happy to say that I was thoroughly impressed by both. Horde 2.0 builds on some already great cooperative survival gameplay by giving you more than just your weapons to work with, but Fortifications, like command posts and spiked barriers, as well, which can get progressively more powerful as you build up cash and continue through the waves.

Conversely, Beast gives you the chance to fight off waves of COG soldiers and Stranded while playing as Locust. It’s not a “Horde-as-Locust” mode though, but rather a time attack mode, challenging you to eliminate your prey as quickly as possible. Oh, and one little caveat. Don’t finish a wave in time and you get hit with the Hammer of Dawn… It’s fast-paced and forces you to be constantly on the offensive and, better yet, you can play as a host of Locust characters, including Tickers, Wretches, Kantus, Boomers and maybe more! I’ll let Rod Fergusson, the game’s Executive Producer, go into more detail in our video interview (whenever we get it online).
