While at Microsoft Canada’s X’11 event last week, I took a few minutes, to try out Twisted Pixel Games’ upcoming third-person on-rails shooter… marionette Kinect title, The Gunstringer. Without a Kinect of my own at home, this was the perfect time to try out the game, as I don’t see another opportunity arising any time soon. The game features a unique control scheme, having players manoeuvre the Gunstringer with their left hand, while aiming and firing with their right. It’s relatively easy to pick up, but mastering coordination for moving and aiming simultaneously takes some patience.

Once I got a handle on the controls though, I started enjoying the experience, even to the point of forgetting how weird I must have looked standing in place, doing a partial Thriller dance with my hands (you’ll see what I mean when we finally get the videos online). The graphics aren’t amazing, but the artistic style is certainly interesting, featuring a toy-like, constructed Western playset look, and the concept so unique that I’m willing to forgive fewer crisp lines. In fact, it’s safe to say that if I did own a Kinect, this would be a title I’d look forward to picking up.
