While at Nintendo of Canada’s E3 2011 review last week, I got my first chance to go hands-on with my most anticipated Wii game of this year, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword. The demo only featured a portion of a dungeon, some bird riding and a boss battle, but it was more than enough for a taste.

As I had hoped, Wii MotionPlus adds considerable accuracy to sword fighting, specifically in the direction you swing your sword. It isn’t 1:1 at all times, but as long as I wasn’t holding the Wii Remote in an awkward position, Link sliced and slashed exactly as I did. First-person looking and aiming also benefit from the motion controls this time round, and I even managed to surprise a Nintendo representative by showing him that you can aim the bow and arrow or slingshot without pointing at the screen, a la Wii Sports Resort.

Meanwhile, the bird riding demo played out like a skybound version of the Epona race in Ocarina of Time, except it was a chase rather than a race. With all this in mind, I can’t wait to see the final product this holiday season once the last few kinks are worked out.
