There must be something about infiltrating seafaring vessels that has seeped into the video game development cycle recently. Both Sledgehammer Games and Naughty Dog opened the Microsoft and Sony E3 2011 press conferences with demos, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception respectively, that featured combat on the high seas. Yeah, it was probably completely coincidental. Either way, both titles were quite impressive, and when the folks from Naughty Dog took the stage to show off Uncharted 3, it was a sight to behold.

As if the franchise wasn’t already a visual masterpiece, the graphics have been stepped up again, with astoundingly detailed environments that pop. The demo takes place on a hijacked cruise ship, as Drake sneaks through corridors, subduing gunmen, and eventually getting caught in the ship’s cargo hold. He quickly attacks his captor, takes his gun and the action continues with Drake deploying an enemy’s grenade while it’s still on his belt, a sudden breach in the ship’s hull, and Drake nearly drowning in an attempt to escape from the ship’s flooding cargo hold. It’s fast-paced pulse-pounding action that I want to get my hands on. Now! Uncharted 3 is scheduled to release on November 1st.
