With the Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta closed for nearly two weeks, I’ve had some time to sit and think about my experiences. Yes, I could have done this sooner, but time is needed to fully process… alright! I’m lazy! Here are my thoughts.

The gameplay was rock solid, with few initial connection issues or disconnects during matches. Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Capture the Leader are loads of fun and offer a frenetic, pulse-pounding experience. The jump-in/jump-out ability makes it easy to get involved in a game or leave when necessary, without too much guilt, especially because players can be replaced by non-player characters and non-player characters can be replaced by real people waiting to play.

To order the maps by preference, I enjoyed Checkout the most, then Trenches, Thrashball, and finally, in a distant fourth, Old Town. There was one odd glitch during my time playing the beta, where one of my teammates appeared as an opponent in one match, but aside from that, some player proximity issues with the Sawed-off Shotgun and occasional problems with vaulting over cover near corners, it was great. There should be plenty of time for Epic to solve those issues.
