There was plenty to see and play at Microsoft’s X’10 holiday preview event in Toronto last week, but the game I was most looking forward to playing was, you guessed it, Rock Band 3. The chance to try out the game’s new features and controllers was too good to pass up, so after getting the formalities of filming a few key interviews out of the way, Nathan and I made a bee-line for Rock Band 3.
The first notable thing about the game is that when playing with all four instrument controllers and microphones, singing is no longer controllable and is just there all the time. In this mode, singing is no longer scored. Since we only played in the quickplay mode, I can’t be sure if it’s the same for the band career, but it likely is. The learning curve on the keyboard, in regular or Pro modes is steep, but if you’re looking to learn to play, it should be quite good. Sadly, Harmonix only teased the new Mustang guitar. It wasn’t compatible with that build of the game. Finally, and interestingly, it turns out that only the Squier is a fully-functioning and amp-ready guitar, not the Mustang.
