When I was a kid, I loved Super Metroid. The fast-paced platformer was one of my favourite experiences on the SNES, and one of the first games I actually managed to complete. Upon hearing the rumblings of a sequel for Wii, I started getting excited. When the offer came to attend the media preview for the upcoming title, I jumped on the opportunity to go.

The first notable feature of the game is the control scheme. Holding the Wii-mote sideways works well for the platforming action style, but having to switch to a different grip in order to enter first-person view is awkward at first.  The learning curve of the game (and the control scheme) is steep, and there isn’t much help provided by the opening sequences. However, if you are willing to put the time in, Metroid: Other M looks to tell one of the deepest stories ever presented by Nintendo. Never has the voice of Samus Aran ever been heard in any game and, even in the limited experience I had, Metroid: Other M was noticeably emotional and dramatic. Look for it in stores on August 31st.
