This years’ San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone and, through all the fanfare, one announcement has left the film industry rocking. Jeremy Renner, Oscar nominated star of the past year’s best picture winner The Hurt Locker, and Joss Whedon, critically acclaimed writer and director of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Angel, have joined the squad for the upcoming Avengers film due for release in 2012. Renner will portray longtime avenger Hawkeye, known for his skill as a grandmaster marksman with a bow and arrow, while Whedon will bring his unique style to the script and skill behind the camera.
Though rumors have been running rampant through the community for weeks, both Marvel Comics and Whedon had not yet confirmed his presence behind the camera. When questioned regarding the film at a San Diego panel, he responded, “It’s not an official thing, I think because Marvel couldn’t afford a press release, so can we make that an official thing? I’m directing The Avengers.” Renner was finally confirmed after a long period of negotiations on Friday, and brings some much-needed star power to the film. After all this time, it seems like all of The Avengers have finally assembled.
