As part of its first quarter media summit, Nintendo announced the launch dates for two of its biggest Wii titles for the year – Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is scheduled to release on May 23rd. The sequel to what is likely the best Super Mario title since Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 2 features a lot of the gravity-defying action of the original Super Mario Galaxy with a number of new galaxies for players to explore. Even better, Mario can partner up with Yoshi during some of the stages, and use some new items, including a drill that lets him tunnel through solid rock.

Metroid: Other M, developed in partnership by Nintendo and Team Ninja, creators of the Ninja Gaiden franchise, is scheduled to release on June 27th. The game takes the sci-fi franchise in a new direction, with a look reminiscent of classic 2D side-scrollers, but the ability for players to switch to 3D at any time. The control scheme also switches from classic two-handed sideways control to pointing at the screen to shoot during combat. The story also takes a deep look into Samus Aran’s past.

Please note: Metroid: Other M images are taken from a development version of the game, in higher definition than what will be available in the release version.

Excited for Super Mario Galaxy 2, I was a big fan of the first one. Fun game

I finally “finished” Galaxy a couple months ago (yes, I’m a bit behind on some of my games). Really enjoyed it. It’s not as ground breaking as some people were saying, as those opinions were likely swayed by the fact that we hadn’t seen a great Mario title in quite some time, but it is likely the best Mario title since Mario 64, as I said in the article.

Nintendo is really churning out the top-nitch first-party titles, a good thing for everybody! I’m very excited for Other M, and definitely also excited for Galaxy 2.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if churning is the right word at the moment. There have been a few really good first party titles for Wii since its launch, but the gaps between have been quite large. I think we should have seen, at the very least, one more new property and a new Zelda title announced (not necessarily released, but announced) by now, especially with the Wii’s success to date.

      • Eli says:

A new Zelda game for Wii actually has been announced, but it’s not going to be out for a while. It’s a good point that the game development hasn’t been consistent with the increase in Nintendo’s popularity through this generation, though.

That’s true, It would be nice if third party companies would put a bit more effort in making a decent game. They all seem a bit lackluster compared to the first party titles. Although Monster Hunter Tri coming out is a solid game. I have played the Japanese version and it’s very promising.

Cool stuff. I haven’t gotten to that part of the press release just yet. There were also a bunch of other first party titles announced in the release, including WarioWare D.I.Y. We’ll continue posting about it this week.

  3. […] that Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best Mario titles since Super Mario 64? Oh yes, I believe I did. But the fact that its sequel is coming out so soon gives me all the more reason to review it now. […]
